I'm doing a 93 to 95+ opti upgrade. I've got two questions:
1.) Does the new wiring harness just plug in like the old one. I know it won't because of the different style pins, but do the wires line up the same or do they have to be switched at all?
2.) I was looking at the back of the new opti and on the piece that spins I see a pin that goes into the center of the timing chain gear, then three indented circles and three indented boxes, one of them being different. I was under in impression that the camshaft pin fits into the back of the opti to get it to spin. Is this assumption true? And if so into which indentation does it fit into? If not how does it spin?
OK, I haven't done this, so this info is hearsay. (I hate it when I see responses like this, but noone has yet answered so take this as encouragement as well).
1. No, you have to either cut the wires and install an old plug or pull the wires from the new connector and put them into the old connector. Option 2 I think is the easiest. Be sure the colors go back into the same slots.
2. Yes the pin goes into the OPTI. The OPTI only fits easily one way. If it doesn't slide in, then you don't have it aligned correctly. Warning: you can force it into the wrong position, but you would have to force it. It should go in easily.
I think you have to either pull the pin out a little or install a new pin. I'm not sure on this point.
1) Depends on the year. I think '93 has the box style with 2 rows of 2 as the connector whereas the later models have a 4 pin single row connector. John is correct in the answer above for the '93, but for the '94 there is only one small change necessary for the harnes to plug and play. You have to cut off an alignment tab inside the new opti harness for it to just snap right in. I know at least 3 out o the 4 wires should be the same in color. As I recall when I spliced my '92's harness one wire was not exactly the same color but the rest had a match.
2) You have to have a longer dowel pin in the cam and it will fit into the slot in the opti drive that is squared off. The pin should not fit in any of the other 2 openings with the way they are shaped.
Yes, the pin on the camshaft can only fit in the boxed opening on your new opti. I actually made two marks on the opti wheel to line up with two marks on the timing chain cover to coordinate the two when I put the opti back on. I got them fairly close, but you need super small fingers to slightly adjust the wheel on the opti to slide in to position. Once it is lined up; it slides real easily into place. It is not too bad; my LT1 is in an f-body so this is the only easy thing I have done to this car.

Thats the answer I was looking for, thanks.
