Monday nite, my alternator blew up... the bearing(s) died. It made the most evil sound when I started it up after seeing X2!!! I was able to get home ok! So no tow!!!
Yesterday, I quickly found a reman'd unit at a local parts shop. It was the 5th call, in alphabetical order, out of the yellow pages!!
$135.00 with a 2 year warrantee.
Last nite after work, I installed said alternator... and successfully broke the ring terminal on the wire from the battery... :mad It took about an hour - longer actually, cause I tried to do it without removing the Camber Bar... bad idea.
I temporarily crimped a 4 gauge ring terminal over the broken joint. It got me through today ok.
Which leads me to my fix of the terminal... I bought a very nice pack of gold 8 gauge terminals and crimped and soldered the aforementioned terminal to the wire and away we go!
So far, 14.5 volts and no noises!!!
One last note... the best I can figure. the alternator was original. It had lasted just over 111,000 miles when it died, and it was still charging!
So far, the new alt is working great! Voltage regulation is much more precise.
I paid $154 and changes a week and half ago because my Pepboy rebuild alt. die on me also. Had to get another one right away and since I don't have the old receipt here with me I had to pay the full price :mad . Since I'll be driving long distance with the Vette for at least the next 6 months, I'll get a spare so I won't get stranded on I-15 again  .
Just FYI....I purchased a 140 amp altenator from a place called Tuff Stuff....it is Chrome...been working great for the last 3 years...on my '84 vette......
and I'm using the March Pulley system (3 Pulleys)....the amp sys.....no problems...and I am very happy with it....I have all the accesories...
I don't know maybe this would help you............
