If my check engine light is not on will I get error codes on a scanner?

If the SES light is not on, the only codes should be history codes. Mine shows a H32 everytime I check. Reminder to self - need to pull the terminal off the battery for awhile to clear that.

Do you scan it yourself?

Everyone can. You just jumper the diagnostics pins and count flashes in the display. You cross reference the numbers to the code and you'll know what they history is in the computer.

You'll probably find the codes and procedure in a post or tip here somewhere.
Even the basic Haynes service book will tell you all about it so you can do it yourself.

I can. If you have the OBD-I ( I believe you have this) you can. Just short the 4 and 12 pins on the ALDL and your digital dash reports the codes stored. Go here http://www.c4vettes.com/codes.htm to learn more.
