Can you guys help me time my car I have it timed so at base idle it is around 4-5degrees with it set here when I am stoped at a stop light the car will be around 500-600RPM at this RPM the car will start to shake and it rumbles but it dosent sound like it will die. In corvette fever they said I would be able to have my car at 0-2 degrees and it would run fine but I dont think my car would be able to do this?
I set the timing on my 89 at 8 degrees BTDC and adjust the TPS to .65 volts. It makes a big difference in idle and throttle response. If you need help, send me a note! Regards, Sam
Many a two-piece harmonic balancer has experienced a situation where the outer ring has slipped ~ therefore rendering all attempt to set base timing impossible.
If you know how to check your balancer to verify it is truly at TDC, I suggest you do so. Here's how to do it.
Screw a piston stop in the spark plug hole. Slowly rotate the engine (with a ratchet on the balancer bolt) until it comes to rest against the piston stop. When it stops, scribe a mark on the balancer at the 0 degrees mark on your timing cover scale. Now, reverse the rotation until it once again is resting on the piston stop. Make another mark.
Now, remove the piston stop and measure the distance between the two marks. The exact center point should be where the balancer timing mark is. If it isn't, then your balancer outer ring has slipped. For a temporary timing mark, use the point where you found the new center for timing your engine. Buy a new balancer and install it at your earliest convenience.
