I was able to change out the tail light on my '85 which was a pain in itself. The first thing I did was turn on the head lights to see if the tail lights would still light up, which they did. The next thing I did was check the turn signal and brake lights to see if they would still work. Now here is where the problem is. The tail lights will turn on but the brake lights and turn signal will not work. Which was the original problem to begin with. One thing that makes me confused is theres only one bulb per tail light so I am confused on why the tail lights will work but they wont work with the brakes and turn signals. It is with the third tail light. Do any of you know what could be wrong?

Check the fuses, the brake lights should run on their own fuse though, separate from the signals. The relay at the top of the brake pedal would be the next thing to check for the brake lights.

Keep in mind the brake light circuit goes through the turn signal switch. Often the contacts in the turn signal switch will go bad, and you will lose brake lights.
Too bad your one year before the "3rd Brake Light" or CHMSL, this condition is easily recognized when ONLY the CHMSL works. (it never flashes, so its circuit does not go through the turn signal switch)
