Can someone give me advice on a good set of roller rockers (1.6 preferrably) for a 91 L98, w aluminium heads. Looking for a set that will go in with minimal trouble, possibly intake only, my exhaust has been modified(Hooker Super Comp headers, 3"y-pipe, cat delete, flomaster 40 Series). Also can I use stock springs? if not where can I get easily order the rockers and springs together.
Thanks
I run Comp Cam Pro Magnum 1.6 full roller rockers on my 113 heads. They require you to clearence the inside of the valve cover. You won't want the stock springs in there. :)
With L98's you can reuse the stock spring with 1.6RR if you have the stock cam. If you have high miles you probably wan tot replace the springs while your at though.
Jeg's, Summit, PAW.... any catalog hi-perf place or even a local speed shop. I got mine from Jeg's; $260
As far as springs...they depend on what you are running for a cam. I'm sure if you speak to someone in their tech department, they will suggest a set. You could also call Comp Cams cam help line 800-999-0853 they could steer you in the right direction.
To avoid removing the rocker studs I suggest Comp Cams self-aligning ProMagnum 1.6:1 RRs for 3/8" studs. I believe you can use the stock pushrods though hardened ones would be nice.
Comp Cams also has a nice set of springs, variety shim pack and new machined locks to round out the package. A little tube of light assembly lube for the pushrod & valve tips will assure a nice break-in of the new parts.
You can order all those directly from Comp Cams for good price, service and maybe better inventory control than a vendor.
It would be a good idea to replace the upper & lower oil seals (here I used GM parts from my local Chevy dealer) and toss the tin oil shedders from atop the valve springs.
With your #113 heads & a stock cam, don't worry about using 1.6 RRs on exhaust with headers; they will work well on int & exh. It was the early L98 iron heads that gave a lumpy idle with 1.6s on the exh.
As mentioned you will need to remove/reduce the drip tabe under the valve covers and likely narrow the bolt tower sides too for clearance of the new RRs.
I USED THE CC MAGNUM 1.6:1 ROLLER TIP ROCKERS ON MY '91. THE VALVE COVERS REQUIRED NO TRIMMING. HARDENED PUSH RODS AND GUIDEPLATES Were necessary., the new rockers are not self-aligning like the originals. I have a stock cam and valve springs.
just remember to get the self-aligning type of rocker arms or convert what you have to guides. I'm using the comp cams SS 1.6 full rollers. stay away from the cheap al rockers...you get what you pay for. Stick with Compcams, Crane, or GM performance Parts (LT4 roller)
