Recently, my steering wheel has become increasingly loose, actually, the shaft has. All the books I have show only to the directional signal, and then, not how to get past that. Its the loosest where the colum just begins to go thru the dash,. Anybody help? Im afraid something might break in there and not when Im standing still.
Is it loose, going up and down (at the dash) or loose in the sense that there is a lot of play in the wheel as you turn it.
I've had both.
Haven't yet fixed the "up and down". I suspect that the bracket that holds the column in the dash could be loose.
For the other (excessive play), there is a joint which allows the steering column to collapse in an accident. In the older cars, this was a rag joint and was replaceable. In the C4 it is some kind of slip joint and is not individually replaceable. The whole column needs to be replaced...or... my mechanic filled the joint with fiberglass resin. It seems to be holding and has significantly improved the situation. Now, I'm not saying that this is going to be as safe, in the event of an accident, but that wasn't my primary concern.
Kind of shooting in the dark.......but after you check all your connection points....did you check your rack and pinion....this is where I had a problem with my '84...(87k miles).....
After replacement.....no more problems.....
Just a thought...
