My 1996 Collector's Edition has the Passive Key Entry system option. For some time now, (with no particular timing as to when it might happen) my door locks would begin chattering (not really fully opening and closing) at a very high frequency (like 20x per second). I had assumed it was a glitch in the PKE system ... that is until I pulled the fuse for that system.
Now with it powered off, I'm still getting the chatter - but not at the same super high frequency. Now it's more like 5X per second and doesn't occur nearly as often. I therefore assume the problem is in the regular remote door lock system. Any ideas out there?
I've hypothized that the base problem is that one of the door switches / circuit is opening and closing and with the PKE system on, it was repeatedly trying to re lock the doors ... ergo the more agressive nature of the problem with the PKE system activated.
Any help would be apppreciated. I love my CE... But I hate this problem!

Actually that was the first thing I tried about a year ago. Bit none the less, with the PKE fuse removed, the fob is out of the picture. Thanks none the less. I'm just hoping that soemone wiht the problem sees this and has cured it!

Mine has done this on a few ocassions. Mostly when the humidity is extremely high (like after a rain or heavy fog) for several hours.
I can hear the PKE module relay clicking on and off during the lock "fluttering". My guess is that the PKE module itself is to blame since I wasn't using the fob at the time.
Since I don't drive the Vette in inclement weather anymore I haven't experienced the problem in quite some time.
I would check the adjustment of the door closure pins. If the adjustment is marginal the door can think it is "opened/closed/opened, etc" as the door bounces around.
It is easy enough to adjust them - just pull out on the little posts in the middle of the switch and then shut the door to adjust them. If the middle posts are gone or broken you can replace them or just shim the switch out with some washers. If this looks like the deal give me a message back as there is a trick to the shim job.
Anyhow, I had the same symptom on my 96 and fixed it by adjusting the pins.
Re: '96 CE Door lock chattering problem (vanduker)

Well I took a lok at the door pin switches and they seem to be fine. BTW, I'm assuming that you're referring to the black, round, spring loaded pins that are located on the door edge in from the latch plate.
I slipped some paper under the area where the pins strike (to make sure they were making firm contact with the black plastic "stricker" pad on the door opening) and when I pulled the paper out, the paper under the pins tore off...ergo they seem to be making good contact.
As for adjusting them out even further, I struck out. The center pin (it looks like a skinny mushroom) will not extend out more than the 1/8" or so that they are at currently. They really don't seem to be adjustable. The larger pin in which they are mounted, depresses with modest finger pressure and smoothly re emerges. Am I missing something?
Also, if those switches were faulty, out of adjustment, wouldn't the interior lights come on? Thanks for your (continuing) help. Cire 96
