Ok I go to pick up the 86 MAF and the guy doesn't think they interchange. So I did not get it and they do not have one for the 85. We called everyone who we thought would know and they say 85 fits only 85, 86 & 87 interchange with each other and 88 & 89 interchange with each other. So unless someone can tell me otherwise i'm screwed.
This sounds like a good one for the experts will someone please help with me in getting the facts on this before I go dump a load on a part i don't need.
I don't mean to question anyones answer I have just been hammered with people who say "you will have codes poping up" and "we have never been able to get another to work right." And I cant afford this mistake.
To my knowledge the MAF itself is the same part #, but the relays are definitely different in 85. So the MAF from 85-89 should work.
You can always call Autozone or AC Delco or whomever and check it.
:iagree: The only difference I think was the way the ecm heated the wires or something. On 85 it was done via a large box sitting next tot the ecm, (On some models actually ON the ECM), while 86+ was using a seperate relay I believe..
Bingo it works. I'm using one from a 86 also and it was only $90.00. Now I have another problem rough idle, No power, hesitation, I don't think it has anything to do with the MAF. I think maybe a injector. Is it normal to hear the ticking from the injector?

Yeah the MAF relay on the 85 is buried inside the dash. Whereas in 86+ its 2 behind the battery on the firewall.
Re: It works (MAF) but now another problem (Mach85)
Yes it is normal to hear clikcing form the injectors. Heck I got new multec injectors few months ago and they click as much as my original '85 injectors.
About your issues, make sure you check your TPS, make sure you do not have a vacuum leak, and try re calibrating the IAC. Ohh and maybe even take the IAC off and clean it. It usually is pretty carbon fouled if it has not been cleaned for a long time (few years).
I kinda ruled out IAC because the engine is not just rough at idle the loss of power and backfire makes me think otherwise. I looked at the vacuum lines everything looks good (that I can see) Someone IM me and mentioned the timing I think that will be next on the check list. I will clean the IAC also though cant hurt.
