Can anyone tell me what to torque the u-joint strap bolts to, on the half-shafts? My Haynes says 150, and that seems a bit much, considering the drive shaft only calls for about 25. Thanks in advance.
Or, tight, with a standard open end or box end wrench. While there is a spec for the torque, these aren't head or rod bolts. All the strap does is keep the u joint cap from sepatating from the yoke. The tab in the yoke keeps the cap from coming off the end of the u joint spider, and the yoke itself transfers the torque from the joint. You just don't want the bolt to back out.
I just replaced the ujoints, hubs, brakes, shocks and NOTHING had a torque of 150 foot lbs...even the spindle nut is only 81 lbs....I can't find the torque setting anywhere, but I was tightening the ujoint strap with an 8 mm socket and split the side of the socket using only my bear hands...probably less than 50 lbs with a 3/8 drive ratchet...must be 150 inch pounds I would guess... :smash:
Thanks for your answers thus far.
Oly...Ialways use Locktite, Blue in this case
Zog...You might want to recheck that spindle nut, It goes 166, and some say 200Ft/Lbs.
The bolt is 8MM, but I think it's the same as 5/16
How about some of you Drag racers, you guys just use 18 Ft/Lbs? On all other cars I'd just use a little Lock-tite, and tighten them good with an open-end, but I figured these Half-shafts might need a little special attention. Again thanks for all your answers.
I just pulled mine off and there was some lock tight from the factory. I bought some green locktight and that set up to fast. So I have to use some red. I use the vien in the forhead trick as soon as you get one to pop out you have it tight. :)
Where did you see 166 pounds....I have two different manuals that both say less than that ...I sure don't want the hubs coming off at 100+mph...thanks for the warning....zog
Just hand tight with some locktite and you'll be good to go. :) Make sure you wire wheel the threads before reassembly to get any old locktite out. They go in soooo much smoother. :)
Agree with the above - about 18-20 ft lbs for the u-joint retainer bolts - cleaned with a dab of Loc-tite blue.
Rear stub axle retainer nuts are 36mm - According to factory (Helms) manual - torque to 166 ft lbs. Anything less is asking for trouble.
Has anyone seen a GM bulletin that raises this number to 200 ft lbs? There has been mention in several threads, but I won't change the way I do it unless I have factory verification. I called 2 dealers that sponsor Corvette Clubs and their Service Managers knew nothing.
