If you are looking for the "Mass" backing that came on the original carpeting, then I suggest you go to the local "Lowes Home Improvement" store and go to the laminate flooring section. They sell the felt backed padding for use as an underlayment. The cost is $40.00 for a complete roll. You could buy a roll, then sell the remainder to other members.
It is dense (good sound insulation) and it has plastic sheeting on one side (lay it face up).
Re: Tech Tip ~ Sound Insulation / Carpet Padding (PurpleC4)
Hey Purp-- Good info.
It would be interesting to know where GM didn't put enough sound insulation in the C4 before I tore the interior out to know how much, and what, to buy.
Does anyone have any pictures of a C4 without the carpeting and such in place?
Re: Tech Tip ~ Sound Insulation / Carpet Padding (jburnett)
Tom,
What's really interesting about this stuff is that it is practically the same weight and quality of the original material in the Mass Backed Carpeting.
There is probably enough felt per roll to completely re-do 3 Vettes.
Re: Tech Tip ~ Sound Insulation / Carpet Padding (PurpleC4)
Purp, SOUNDS great! Been thinking about what to do about just this.
Do you know if this will also help slow down some of the heat also?
I've been looing at the "heat wrap" that MID America has that wraps around the exaust pipe and I seem to recall a material that you lay under the carpet also that blocks heat. Have you heard of these and what do you think of them?
If I can find one material that will do both...this would be great!
Thanks!
Tom,
I know that you are a Tech Writer too. If you use this material, what are the chances we can get you to write a paper on your experience? This is a low-cost alternative to replace worn padding ~ as well as improve the sound deadening for those who bought the non-Mass Backed replacement carpeting due to budget constraints.
BIG K,
The heat padding that goes on the tunnel is a good start. The pad is dense, yet does create a barrier to conducted heat infiltration. I would start with the pad, then gauge the effectiveness. I own a 92 Coupe and heat isn't near the problem with later C4's as it was with the earlier years.
Re: Tech Tip ~ Sound Insulation / Carpet Padding (PurpleC4)
Speaking of Lowe's, they sell thin (~1/8 inch), foil-faced thermal insulation in 2 foot wide rolls. One roll looked like it was more that enough to do the front half of a C4. I plan to use the carpets as a templete and install some of this stuff time this summer.
