whining sound from somewhere..
I noticed a whining sound from the engine area. Sounds like a supercharger but more quiet. It comes and goes.
I thougt it could several thing.
Alternator?
Waterpump?
Power steering pump?
AIR pump ( mine is gutted, but where rotating smooth when I turned it by hand )
What usual can make this sound?

Do you have a ZF 6-speed transmission? If so try pressing the clutch, it will probably go away. Mine does the same, and you're right it sounds exactly like a quiet super charger. It's the ZF you're hearing and according to my dicussions with ZF North America and Rockland Standard Gear this is a normal sound, nothing to worry about. A friend of mine has a '94 and makes the same sound. Most people don't even notice it.

no its not the ZF. Still got the whine with clutch engage.
My bet is the alternator, but the strange thing is that I dident got the whine before i did my topend job ? Could the alternator be out of aligment?
My other bet is my gutted AIR pump. Could it make more noise now when the pipe going from the AIR pump is remowed?

Nobody can diagnose what this is on this forum.
It could be any of the things you mention but you have to get under the hood to figure it out.
Go get a mechanic's stethascope and listen to the moving components.
It will take you about 15 seconds to know where the whine is coming from rather than waiting another day for someone to 'guess' in this thread.

On my '90, the A/C compressor has a significant whine. It seems to vary a bit with outside temperature and goes away completely when the A/C compressor is turned off. This has been a long term thing so the compressor is not destroying itself.

Mine had a bad rear bearing in the alternator one time. Sounds like you say. You could actually see the ball bearing falling apart on the back of the alternator.
How 'bout a vacuum leak? Maybe you missed a line?
