Auto Transmission screwed?
I was on the way to work today and Drive doesn't seem to want to hold third - it will go up there and then shift down.
I checked the fluid and it smells burnt and I got black some residue when I wiped the dipstick.
I called a transmission shop and they will take a look at it on Tuesday (Monday is a holiday here) I mentioned the black stuff and asked if it's bad news - the guy said it's good for business.
Am I screwed?
Here's what I did - in a nutshell. I installed the shift kit and the ring for the TV boost valve was wrong. I went for a ride and got to a stop light and lost everything. I had to rev the crpa out of it to get out of there for safetys sake. I towed the car home, found the valve in the pan, re-installed. Cleaned out the black soot. I then flushed the tranny as per procedures here. It seemed pretty good all last week - I've always had a hard time getting the car to drop into first (since the kit) at stop lights, but I was still tuning the TV cable.
I just know the transmission shop is planning a big payoff thanks to something I screwed up.

anytime you put in a shift kit, you also need a tranny cooler IMO, the kit puts a extra stress on things in there and 700r4s are allergic to heat
installing a shift kit isnt that hard, but its easy to screw something up in our transmissions, so I myself have stayed well away from it
Be sure to get a WARRANTY, always always always always get a warranty on an automatic rebuild or new automatic

The fluid isn't black, I just get some black residue on the towel when I wipe the dipstick. The fluid is still red.
And yeah, I shoulda taken the car and got someone else to do this shift kit, but it's too late now. :nonod:
The TV was adjusted correctly, but I was afraid that revving the poopie out of her to get outta the way of that truck probably did some damage.
Thanks.
