My dad has an 87 Callaway and we can not find the blower relay. We think this is the problem. The whole heating and a/c unit does not work. We know the individual components work (we hot wired the compressor, it works) and are really not sure what the problem is. I think the underdash setup in the Callaway is the same as in any other '87, so hopefully someone can help us. I ran a search for similar topics in the forum, but could not find anything. Thank you in advance.
ALthough I am not familiar with a 1987's under dash setup, I am sure it is the same between a Callaway & Stock as that does not sound like a part that would need to be changed for the RPO B2K option -
Scorp - are the relays different between the two??
Well it depends on what exactly is wrong. It could be his blower motor control module that is on top of the blower motor. The part that two wiring harnesses plug into. If that part fails the blower can either not work at all, or be stuck on all the time. This particular part is different between the two. I have to replace mine (the blower comes on by itself even with the key out of the car) and its about $88 I think for the computer controlled version.
I believe the controls are electric. I have a 94 with manual controls and we tried to diagnose the problem with my 94 service manual and found that the systems are completely different. Right now we think the problem is the relay, but have not been able to figure out where the relay is. It sounds like scorp may be on to something with the blower control module. I am not sure if we have tested that yet or not. All I know is that the compressor works. We think the relay is the problem because nothing works on the entire a/c-heating unit.
I will go out to the garage and see if there is some way to hook up a test light or something to the blower motor control module. As you have probably already guessed, electrical systems are not really our area of expertice.
If your climate control has the temp readout and a switch for ext/int it is the electronic type unit; check for the RPO C68 code under the console lid.
On my '88 there is no compressor relay; control is provided through the Blower Control Module located in front of dash in LH side of evaporator housing.
To check out the control, measure the voltage on the Grn wire at the A/C compressor clutch. It should be +12Vdc with the A/C off and 0Vdc with the A/C on.
There is a fusable link in the Red wire to the Blower Control Module so check for +12Vdc at it's connection.
You can also check for diagnostic codes in the A/C Controller.
