My '91, 6-spd only starts cleanly about 2 out of 5 times. Years ago was diagnosed as bad computer (ECM?), was replaced, and only helped for a while. Is real bad again. Rest of electrical system checks out, just had alternator installed. 3 out of 5 times will not run, or will idle >600 rpm, then die. Have to turn ignition totally off to take another try at starting. When starts clean runs perfectly for the balance of cycle. Anyone have an idea on this one, car has 32K miles on it, only driven occasionally. [IMG
You mean idle less than 600RPM then die? Could be a timing issue. The ECM only controls the timing once the RPM is over ~400. Up until 400RPM, the timing is controlled by the 'built-in' advance of the EST module, which is under the distributor cap. Often times, a bad module will not set a code, but if it does, it will be a code 42. It will probably take you an hour to remove your first time and can be tested for free at a place like AutoZone.
Just sounds like a problem with the ignition and the distributor pulse (pickup coil, EST module, etc). When you check codes, do you at least get a code 12?

Re: Help!! ECM Problem? (lancesomers)
Welcome to the forum, you’ll find a lot of good info here. Check over on the ECM/Tuning forum for more info.
Iv found that these cars are almost impossible to work on without a factory service manual and the Craig Moates software, but if it does work for ya, might be a nice gesture to make a donation to Craig via PayPal.
You’ll need a laptop running Win98, and custom built cable. I can’t remember the guys name that builds the cables, but this info should be readily available in the ECM section. The software is free and the cable is about 100 dollars. If you ask me it’s the best investment money can buy if you’re going to work on the Vette yourself.

Thanks, your description of the issue sounds like my problem, I am thinking that the distributor part (EST) was what was previously replaced and not the ECM; I don't recall for sure, will have to check the receipts. Thanks again, I will follow up based on your info.
