Main and Cam bearing question???
I was just curious why manufactures don’t use ball bearing as Cam or Main bearings?
I remember my Honda CR 2-stroke dirt bike used ball bearings for the crank, and im pretty sure my Yamaha sport street bike used ball bearings for the crank, and transmission. The only thing I can think of is the torque… Would the ball bearing not hold up to the torque of our V8’s
It just seems the ball bearings would provide a less friction higher revving alternative to our oil type bearings
I'd say it costs way too much. I also agree with the torque.. think about the surface area of a ballbearing as opposed to our bearings.... HUGE difference. Ballbearings would have to be made out of titanium or stronger metal i would think, haha.
they do have "roller" cam bearings. comp cams and many others sell them.
you do have to cut your cam journals to fit them. they are very durable. however , unless you run high spring pressures on your valve train, they offer no benefits.

Well, I don't know what the load distribution looks like on sleeve bearings, but I'm willing to bet it has a much smaller load area than you think. :yesnod: It all depends on the oil characteristics and tolerances.
Needle bearings are much better at taking high loads than *****, and might work. I really don't see why anyone would use ball bearings though.
