My dash coolant temperature gauge does not agree with the digital value on the dash. It appears to read 5 degrees celcius hotter. Is this normal due to the sensor being in the back of the head as opposed to the water pump for the CCM sensor?
I noticed this while idling in town today. It gradually heats up to approximately 110 on the digital and almost in the red zone on the gauge. Then the fans kick in and cool it down to 100 on the digital, but the gauge still shows quite hot. The fans are operating as they should be according to the service manual (on above 108 off at 105 or so). With A/C on the fans are running all the time in low speed so it stays cooler (correct according to service manual). Can someone confirm this temperature range is normal compared to their car?
Just wondering what gauge I should trust? I don't like it running so hot while idling so I may have to look into reprogramming the PCM to turn the fans on at a lower temp.
When I took delivery of my '94, there was a tag hanging from the steering column tilt lever that basically said the analog gauges were more or less guidelines, and the digital readout was the real info.
I probably have it in a bag somewhere, along with the window sticker and other delivery items ( including the questionnaire about the paint job)..
I have only had my 95 for a few months. No papers, no books or manuals came with it. Its my first 'vette.
How do you get the temp to read digital ? I'll fool with it at lunch, but thought I would ask to.
Re: LT1 Dash Coolant Temperature Gauge (BlackBeast2)
The digital gauge reads on one the radiator side of the waterpump and the analog gauge reads off of the coolant in the head or block. I know this because the relay went out for my electric waterpump which caused it not too work and the coolant on the digital gauge read like 90 degrees and the analog was completely pegged and I had steam coming out of my hood.
As soon as I hooked power to the pump and ran some coolant into the radiator, the digital gauge immediately read like 260...

:iagree: Sounds about right, becasue of the location of each sensor!
Not sure about celsius, but my car normally runs at 197-201 will on the freeways. Gets hotter in the stop and go stuff. Fans perform as you previously stated by design. No worries.
Yes, hotter temps require Mobil1 oil. Also, it helps with emissions too. Emissions require a hotter engine to provide the best burn, heats oil up sooner to get rid of contaminates and heats the O2 sensors sooner for better fuel management ie...emissions.
