LT1 Oil Leak
I’ve had my 96 LT1 for about a year and yesterday I noticed a small oil spot in the driveway. I jacked it up and it appears to be coming from the front of the motor but I can’t see what is actually leaking. Are LT1 motors noted for leaking in any one place? Its has 55k miles.
Thanks
Thanks to all who responded. I took the car to the car wash and cleaned the motor, took it for a ride then jacked it up so I could get underneath. With good light I could now see it is the front seal for the vibration dampener. With that cross-member and steering assembly in the way I can’t see how to get a puller on to remove it. :banghead: :banghead:
I don't know much about LT1s, my engine is a L98. This reply will help you find the leak, though. I used a UV leak detector to find the source of my leak. I got the info from this post.. http://forums.corvetteforum.com/zerothread?id=554552
I think it will help you, too.
We have used some aftermarket pumps and when w/p drive rotates it isn't
true,if you replaced with GM that shouldn't be your problem, might just be that
seal should have also been replaced, because it was disturbed by pump r&r
At the front and back of the intake where it meets the block.
LT1's are notorious for minor leaks at the intake gasket. Usually in the back, where you can't see the leaking. Still, I wouldn't worry so long as the car doesn't need too much added oil. My LT1 has 105,000 miles and never needs topping off, yet I still see small drips under the car.
Don't forget the oil pan. I have a leak right now too. I can always see a drip hanging off the back of the oil pan near the plug. I'm hoping it's just the fact that my waterpump seal was shot!
Depending on the miles. The Leak is probably from front main Crank seal or front engine cover. LT1's are more prone to leak oil at the front and rear portions of the intake (Look under throttlebody and around EGR and check for leaks)
If it is the front seal (I just went through this last month) I would suggest:
Replacing Opti; Water Pump; Plug Wires at the same time as the Labor is basically a wash.
Make sure what you see is oil and not Power Steering fluid. The power steering fluid resevoir line (Metal Pipe has rubber hose ends that sometimes leak)
budmont, sorry I didn't reply to your I/M,ad zapper was turned on and it was
zapping my I/M's.Had any luck on your leak,if you haven't had time good luck
