Default fuel pump??

Hi all. I just bought my first Vette, an '85 coupe, and I love it! It has 92k, and had only been driven 31K in the last 12 years. But I had a problem with it today, and was hoping someone may have some ideas.
Had been running it all day, and sometimes IU was getting on it pretty hard on the open freeway, but it was running just fine until I was off the freeway for about 2 miles. I was at a light, started to go, then it started dying. I nursed it into a parking lot and waited (was thinking vapor lock) for 2 hours. Definately seemed to be a fuel issue. After trying to start it a few times, (would die soon after turning over), it stopped turning over like it wasn't getting any fuel. My guess (uneducated as it may be) is fuek pump. Anyone agree or disagree?

It's a 4+3, if that helps.

Would really love to hear you experts give me some ideas to go on.

Thanks!

Is there a service light on? Check for codes? When the car restart can you still drive it and is the engine running rough? If you don't have the factory manual yet, get the aftermarket manual from the local autoparts store. In the book it does show how to check the fuel pump operation. I can't remember where right now but it does show some pictures where you should be looking into.

It doesn't start, or drive. Sounds like it's out of gas (full tank). I have the original manual and the aftermarket, but I haven't gotten a gauge yet to test it. What about the FP relay?

For the $90 for a new Carter Fuel Pump, I think I'll just go ahead and drop in a new one and see what happens. If nothing else, I have a new fuel pump :)

Put a mechanical gauge on it and see if it maintains pressure. If not, throw a new pump in there. You can get a Walbro GSS-307 for about $110 and it takes 30 minutes to an hour to install with some basic tools.

Easiest way to check if your fuel pump is going or about to be dead (but not 100% dead yet).

Floor the gas pedal as you start the car. If it styarts up and you can keep it running as you press on the gas, but stalls if it gets to idle, it is usually a fuel pump..... or a VERY stuffed catalytic converter. WHen both of those went on my '85 they caused the exact same symptoms..

Good luck ... ps.. check your fuel filter as someone already posted here..

Hi All -

Thanks fo rthe input. I went ahead and picked up a Carter FP, strainer, and WIX fuel filter (what's the feedback on WIX?), and had them all installed in about 2 hours.

Once the fuel pump was in, it fired right up! :D

Other than changing oil and plugs in my Blazer, this is the 'biggest' repair I've ever done, and it worked! Interesting how I chose a Corvette to learn repairs on.

Took it out for a few minutes tonight, and she purred to 115mph... Man I LOVE this car!

Thanks again all!

So where does one find a GSS-307 for $110. The Racetronix kit is nice but I just want a good quality pump and don't want to mess with the work and cost of the extra hardware. The pump is a direct bolt in without the kit is it not? There do not seem to be any local sources in the Seattle area :nonod:

I got mine from http://www.musclemotors.com/ out of California I think. It was actually $119 but I got one from a group buy for $110.

The harness takes about 20-30 minutes to install on your back and it will guarantee peak performance from your pump. The GSS340M would be a better choice over the GSS307M for the small price difference.

If all you want is the pump + install kit we sell those separate as well.
