Its been over a year since I last posted here. Your first year away at college would do that to you. If anyones still around, that remembers my old 383 project I say hello again and great you with a new problem :D The Vette has been through its third torque converter now. The first two were on the old motor but the third was suppose to be built stronger and better, thats what the mechanic said. It's been the same guy every time and he's set me up nice ie. only parts every time. He just put in the forth converter, a remanufactured factory converter.... :nonod: What would be the advantages to a Vigilante or high performance converter and how much $$ are we talking. I figure this motor just wants to continue to rip these things apart.
My sig appears to have been deleted so here goes the exhausting list:
1990 Red Conv. 110k miles
383 Stroker w/ Super Ram intake, Hooker headers w/ straight pipes
10k miles on the motor, no major problems to date
3 angle valve and port on the heads, fully ported Super Ram intake plenum and runners
Monza exhaust tips, Custom Eprom (Still working on that...anyone offer some help???)
Mind fart...thats all that pops out will add as it comes to me
You definitely need a performance TC behind that 383.
Vigilante is a well know name but give Grant Transmission a call (phone # on my site) and explain your situation. See what he can some up with and compare it with the cost of a Vigilante.
So when we're talking about a street car are you saying its less important? I don't run slicks and have trouble hooking up as it is on my 17 x 11s. I know theres more importance here in daily driving isn't there? Or is a TC mostly a off the line kind of mod?
I personally think its more of a off-the-line/launching type of mod, but some may disagree on finer points.
I would spend the money now, PI Vigilante is probably the most recommended brand of TC on the forum, and its one of those things where you get what you pay for. If you want one that wont break all the time, you should get one. Some of these guys put hundreds of passes on it and your case is the only instance of a TC breaking that ive heard of. So, i would say that the Vig works great for daily driving.
Its the stall rpm that will mess with daily driving habits more than anything else. Too high a stall may make the tranny feel a little loose. Vigilante does change the stall once for free for you if you dont like it though.
