Default ticking sound.

With my headers I noticed that I got som "ticking" sound coming from under the car, from the headers. A possible exhaust leak, or normal sound with headers?
thanks

Could it be a plug wire shorting out on the headers? Easy to see at night with the hood open. 84 CF 91 ZR-1

You have the Hedman's right? If so, then I'm pretty sure that's normal. I hear it too on my 87. I'll have the car back at PHP for the rest of my mods soon and I'm going to check everything to make sure.

If one of your plug wires has a short in it due to wear it can go to ground on the header and will make a ticking sound as it fires against the header. They do make burn proof plug wires for this very reason. 84 CF 91 ZR-1

yeah i got hedmans. The sound follows rpm.

I will check my plugs. But is it ok for a healthy wire to touch the header pipe?

Spark Plug wires shouldn't be touching the headers, they get really hot.. Melt the wires all too easy. then you get that ticking sound. Had that happen on my Camaro. Lot easier to change the plug wires on it than the vette..

:iagree:

Talor has a crappy web site so the pic I'm adding on here is the only one they have and my photo's haven't been scanned yet. I use the Taylor boot covers and had to make some spacers so I could still use the stock wire retainers. The only thing making contact with the headers is little parts of the boot covers. Since your wires are still heathy and not burned through I'd still say the sound is normal but get the wires off the headers or they will burn through eventually.

The ticking sound I'm referring to is the sound the exhaust makes going through the collector. I'm guessing collector b/c that is the general area the sound is coming from. You said you dented the header in a previous post. Did the ticking become more audible after you dinged the header?

yeh its from the collector area.
I really cant tell if the sound increased after my little adventure with the speed bump. But its sounding a bit less when the car gets hot..

mayby you cant answer this , but why does the exhaust tick when they left the header going in to the collector? And why should the sound be stronger after I bumpt the headers going over a speed bump? Just curios..hmm...

As far as the ding question, I was just curious as to see if the dent (which might change the air flow slightly) made a different sound. I think that sound is from the cam and higher lift rockers pushing more air down the exhaust. I guess the sound is more of a popping sound than a ticking. It's just the popping is more metallic sounding which makes it sound like a tick. Are you confused yet? I think I just confused myself here. :skep:

Are you sure the headers are clear of everything? I'm clear of everything but maybe one of my band clamps is coming loose. My noise comes and goes but I never paid any attention to wether it was temperature related or not. Did you ase any clamps or did you have evrything welded up? Like I said, I'll have the car on a lift soon and I had planned to go over the exhaust anyway due to the sound it makes. I don't suspect any leaks in the system that's why I'm thinking it's the cam and rockers making the sound more audible.

You have an exhaust leak. No big deal but it can drive you nuts.

Stuff rags in the tips then either carefully feel around the headers or use a tube to hear the leak. Since you hit a speed bump I would go to an exhaust shop and get it checked out.

A very small hole can make this sound.

I've seen them leak were the tubes are welded to the collectors, a pin hole in the weld will make it tick. Seen it alot on GM factory headers.

devilfish,

Did you figure out that ticking yet? I looked under my car yesterday and saw a nasty leak on my system where the cat meets the rear y-pipe. The whole area is coated black!! It's probably safe to say that's where my tick is coming from.
