Can I run a 1990 L-98 at 11 and still use pump gas and have it run right ? I was talking to the the shop that is going to do the heads and he was a little uncertain a tuner could get the engine to run right. We were thinking of using a little larger gasket just in case.
I know some of you guys have "been their done that and bought the T-poopie". What do you think ?
I think you would have to run zero deck to minimize quench and have the chambers shapped for max swirl. Even then 11:1 might be a little much for a L98.
Of course a big cam will lower the squeeze (and detonation tendency), at least at lower RPM.
I cut and pasted this Info regarding the L98 engine from the link above;
1. Maximum compression on pump gas is around 10:1 with cast-iron heads and 11:1 with aluminium heads. With older combustion chamber designs like that of the L98, stay on the low side of 11 :1, around 10.75:1. If you want to add a supercharger or nitrous, drop the compression ratio 1 point.
