Default starter install and sealer

just had my starter rebuilt. after the first reinstall I had some noise coming from the starter, as if it wasn't disengaging. I removed it and reinstalled it again but left the foam ring off this time. Everything now works fine. The foam must have gotten pinched when I put it on the first time and caused an alignment problem. Should I try and reinstall the foam sealer again? I should be ok with out it, right? Out of all the other starters I've replaced before I don't recall any having anything like the foam sealer on the C4's.
any thoughts?

It sounds like you might want to go get some shims to lower the height of your starter. If your foam sealer is causing that misalignment, then it just needs a small shim. I got the shims for the auto parts store. I reinstalled the same foam sealer. I'd imagine it also helps against vibrations between the two metal parts.
