i think at least. got my car back a couple hours ago. the gauge was accurate, so something is messed up under there. but if the engine has that few miles on it (67k), and it does, he doesnt think it will need to be rebuilt. so he will pop the oil pan off and check the bearings, see how they look. if they need to be replaced, he said around $600. if they are fine, he will do the oil pump itself, around $350-375, all installed. but, if there is a lot of gunk underneath around these, maybe a rebuild... :banghead: . lets hope not! thanks for all of your help so far guys, and are these prices reasonable for the work that will be done? sounds a heck of a lot better than a multi thousand dollar rebuild!

Why would an engine (particularly an EFI engine) need a rebuild or have substantial bearing wear at only 67K? The are only three reasons I can think of....abuse, neglect, or catastrophic internal failure. My 84 has the original 145K engine in it, still going strong, still hold 50-55 psi of oil pressure, good compression, and burns no oil. I suspect it will go another 40-50K. Did I miss a previous thread? Did you oil pump fail? Another odd occurrence....these usually go just about forever. Wow.....I'm curious to know
yeah, you probably missed my other threads a while back.
ive been having some oil pressure issues. when the car heats up, the oil pressure at idle is usually anywhere from 8-12, and ive seen it drop down to 4 before. and at higher rpms, it never gets above 30. even if im near the redline, it likes to sit low. it wasnt the gauge, as my mechanic did a pressure check and said it was low. so he wants to drop the pan and see what is going on.
i know what you mean about how the bearings shouldnt be worn. my mechanic is baffled about it, as am i. it just seems so early. they are original miles as the carfax checked out perfectly. abuse, i doubt it. i try to drive the car like it was meant to be driven. neglect, probably not either. the previous owner was a car mechanic himself, and took good care of it. ive only had her for 9 months, and have tried to take as best care of her as possible. and otherwise engine failure, i sure as hell hope not. ill keep you updated on the situation, as she goes back in on thursday.
Wow....those pressures are very low. How long was it run like that? I'm guessing that if the car was previously taken care of, then the oil pump or pressure relief valve is to blame. It would be really odd to have that degree of bearing wear on a car that was maintained.
