Does anyone have any good tests to tell if a fuel injector is bad or not? I have been debating if I should get new injectors but need to convince myself these are bad first. I tested all the resistances both cold and hot, all are 17.0. When listening to them with a screwdriver up to my ear all except one have a very loud click that you can feel just by putting your finger at the top of the injector. One has a very soft tick you can barely hear with the screwdriver, but unplugging it does drop the idle so it must be doing something. I read in one book that a loud injector is a sign it is plugged. Any input on this would be greatly appreciated. By the way it is an 88 basically stock, the injectors also appear to be original.
If you're willing to put up with the downtime, then send them to Rich at Cruzin Performance (www.cruzinperformance.com). He charges $11/ea to flow test and clean them. He did a great job removing contaminants out of mine, restoring them to factory fresh condition.
If the resistance was good, id check them by hooking up a pressure gauge at the rail and seeing if pressure holds steady after you shut the engine off. If it doesnt, at least one is leaking.
Ticking is normal.
If only one or two is bad, you can send them off for servicing or replace them with Ford #24s.
I have considered sending them in to be cleaned the only concern I have about this is the age of the injectors, as far as I can tell they are the stock injectors with 156,000 miles on them. I'm worried about worn parts inside that cannot be replaced, how many miles did yours have when you got them cleaned?
I have tested to see if any are leaking and none seem to be the pressure holds good for well over an hour.
I have been considering getting a set of injectors from a website called Five-o-motor sports, has anyone used them before? They have a set for 188.00 dollars? Vader where is the best place to get the Ford 24# and are there any other adjustments that need to be made? Are they physically the same as the bosch, do they use the same electrical plug?
If yours are not leaking, then i wouldnt really worry about it. Rich at Cruzin will fix/replace anything thats broken, usually theyre just dirty as hell.
Dont remember where everybody is getting their SVO #24s, run a search and i bet you find out, they come up about once a week.
Its just plug and play, a Bosch/Ford design, only modification i would make with the bigger #24s is an adjustable pressure regulator and for you to turn down the fuel pressure a little to help the computer compensate. Its not necessary, but it is a good idea to HELP it.
If so, after the cleaning of the old, or the replacement with the SVO injectors, all he'd really need to do is disconnect the battery for ten minutes and then go out for a driving loop. The MAF cars will just adjust their STFT / LTFT values and compensate by adding in 'go lean' counts when the O2 sensors indicate that there is too much fuel going into the cylinder.
Unless the new or clean injectors flow so well that the LTFT can't add enough 'go lean' counts to compensate, that is...
