Is the aux fan supposed to come on when a/c is turned on? Car ran hot for the 1st time with the a/c on, that's why I'm asking. Never did before. I wonder if the aux went bad. Is there a simple way to manually make it come on to test that it's working? I let the car get up to temperature in the garage...let it get hot...and only the main fan came on. Turned on the a/c and the second fan did not kick in.
I've installed a 200 degree aux fan switch and now my aux fan comes on at just over 200 degrees... well at least it WAS working... the plastic connector housing for the aux fan wire that plugs into the switch had crumbled from the heat, so I replaced that plastic housing and now it holds firmly in place, but the aux fan is not working now... maybe i broke a wire, maybe the relay went out, maybe the switch stopped working... i don't know...
Seems like I've seen descriptions of how other's have wired the fans together in such a way that they both come on, which makes sense to me... I wish that both fans would always come on whenever a condition is met for either fan to activate... In my case, the main fan would come on at 200 degrees when the aux fan kicked in (without having to reprogram the ECM chip), and the aux fan would come on with the main fan when the ac was turned on... But somehow, the descriptions I've seen for wiring mods either didn't make clear sense to me or didn't apply to my car...
As they come from the factory, the aux fan serves more as an emergency fan than only kicks in when the temps are very high... my car seems to like to run in the 190's temp range, so having both fans kick in at 200 would seem to be a good plan
Not too hard to find - just follow the red wire from the Relay on the driver's side wheel well to the terminal block. Unfortunately, it shares a terminal with the link for the main fan, so for a proper repair, you'll need to replace the terminal also (I'd just go ahead & use a separate terminal for each link). Just be sure to solder all crimps so that it doesn't drop voltage.
