Default K&N FILTER

I need a new air filter and was wondering if the K&N filter is really worth the much extra cost...Does it really help performance...or is it just hype?...And does the noise level go up with the K&N filter~

Thanks
  :seeya

It definitely works, sound level doesn’t change. You’re not going to notice huge differences, but they are there.

It does help L98s, there are dyno results to prove it. Its probably worth a solid 5hp.

Mine does make a sucking sound with the cut lid.

Use the K&N.. at the very least you won't be buying any more air filters. I think it does help, to small degree. No increase in sound, in my '93. It does breathe better with the K&N tho.

Do the K&N and use a dremel to cut the louvers out of the lid. You'll like it! With a stock exhaust you can hear a difference.

The K&N is well worth it. You can also purchase a full open cover, to replace (if you don't want to cut) your original air box intake cover. The two work great and are offered through both Eklers or Mid America. :D :D

I high-jacked this thread off the BMWM5.COM board:

At a porscheboard, some guy did a comparasion between stock airfilter in his TT (?) and the K&N airfilter... Take a look at the results!

quote:
Having a rainy saturday to contend with, I did a little test using an Kurtz Digital airflow meter. I compared a new stock filter to a K&N air filter.
I tried doing it "in-situ" but too many variables, so I set up a 3x3 duct and a constant air source.
Results: In measured air flow velocity Stock:18200 +/- 50 SFPM
K&N : 17600 +/-50P SFPM
That's standard feet per minute.
Converting that to volume, which is more important to us then velocity:
Stock 1138 SCFM
K&N 1100 SCFM Standard cubic feet per minute.

3 separate runs, same somewhat surprising results, I was theorizing that the narrow folds in the stock filter increase velocity, and like a set of headers, pulls or evacuates the area behind it. Just a thought, and if true, pretty brainy by the Porsche guys

Here's the thread: http://www.funcarsonline.com/ubbthr...lapsed&sb=5&o=7

A reply to this post reads:

the k&n's are overrated, yes. a clean fram air filter usually flows better than its k&n counterpart. that is a dyno-proven fact.

the only thing the k&n has going for it is reusability. but if you oil it too much it will flow even less. stick to a good cheap air filter and replace it regularly. there are other more important factors in the engine that limit longevity anyhow

the k&n is yet another urban myth...

Just another opinion...YOU decide!
