I have upgraded my brakes to the 13" GS brakes and have replaced the pads at least twice. A friend of mind says the caliper pins should be replaced with each set of pads, and that's what GM recomends. I'm about to replace the rotors now (roadcourses take their toll!), and was thinking I outa replace them, especially since the pad wear was so uneven from top to bottom.
The pins are generally in good shape, only very minor blemishes on them. I used 400 grit sandpaper on them the last time, and put some hi temp graphite lube on them when I reassembled.
I just went to 2 dealers and "Brake Specialists". Dealers quoted me $17 each pin, and nobody stocks them. This leads me to believe my friend must be mistaken on the GM recomendation that they be replaced with each set of pads.
I know if they become pited the pads may not slide on the guide pins smoothly and that might account for abnormal wear. But I wanted to get y'alls opinion.
Re: recomendation on caliper pin replacement (tkmyers7)
Jeff Kopp, our forum parts provider guru should have them. http://www.superchevyperformance.com/misc/gsbrakes.asp
Call the 800 number and ask Chris (Jeff's replacement) for the Corvette Forum prices. The page shows the pin for $9.39 each and the c-clip for $4.28 each.
Even though they seem pricey for changing them at each pad change, the $30 or so is probably cheap insurance for the track!
