my friend is thinking about buying a 90's vette but he wants to know if his 1971 built 383 stroker bottom end will work in the lt1? I know it will work on the tpi but how about the lt1? besides the flywheel being different (difference between 1 piece and 2 piece rear main seal) what other problems are their?? any help and guidance would be great :)
You'll need a stand-alone EFI computer. The LT1 PCM expects an Optispark signal; an HEI distrib won't work.
You'd also have to use the LT1 heads because of the reverse cooling thing. Also I'm not sure the coolant passages in the old block would be compatible - don't know.
sorry guys I guess I wasnt very clear, my friend is only using the short block from the 71, he will use everything else from the lt1 engine including ignition, heads and intake. will there be any problems with this setup?

You can't do that, the LT heads are reverse cooled heads, whereas the 71 shortblock you have would be normal cooling, so none of the cooling passages would line up. You would need to use a set of normal cooling heads...there are plenty out there to choose from.
The LT1 block has reverse flow cooling and opti spark. The pump and opti will not change over to a non LT1 block.
Don't get me wrong it will physically fit, but he will need a different drive belt configuration to incorporate a standard water pump, and make provisions for a standard distributor. Or go distributorless!!
