Default Fan Temperature Switch (2)

I read the first post on this subject, got all excited, before I realized that it wasn't for an LT1.

Any way to set the fan up to start at a lower temp in an LT1 without reprogramming the chip?

Thanks!!!

There were a couple threads in C4 general about getting different thermostat. Do a search on "temperature" and you should find a couple.

Thanks. I'm not looking for a thermostat. I've got the stock 180.

On the freeway, the car runs a consistent 192 F. In all weather conditions. The cooling system works perfectly.

When driving in traffic w/o the AC on, the fans don't kick on till about 238. That just seems ridiculous. Maybe it's perfectly fine - it just bugs me. There are manual switches, or a reprogramming of the ECM as options to change it. As I understand it, the primary fan is controlled by the ECM. The secondary fan is controlled by a temperature activated switch. (I could be wrong)

So changing out the secondary fan switch with one calibrated for a lower temperature is a cheap solution to the heat issue.

That would keep the car at normal temperatures during traffic conditions.

Any thoughts?

That's exactly what one of the posts said. The fans kicks on at 238. I believe it's how GM designed it. Don't ask me why, or what they were think at the time. :D
I am no expert on this subject. So can't really help you with it. I am actually trying to find out ways of fixing the same "problem"

Both fans are controlled by the ECM

The primary fan (drivers side) comes on when the coolant temp > 226F, Oil temp > 228F, AC high pressure signal is activated or trouble codes 14, 15, 52 or 62 are set. Fan will stay on until the coolant temp drops 41F or the oil temp drops 36F. However minimum time is 30 seconds.

The secondary fan (passengers side) comes on when the coolant temp > 234F, Oil temp > 235F, AC high pressure signal is activated or trouble codes 14, 15, 52 or 62 are set. Fan will stay on until the coolant temp drops 41F or the oil temp drops 36F. However minimum time is 25 seconds.

Vehicle speed sensor will turn the fans off at a certain speed.

Relays are located on the drivers side of the fan shroud.

You can get a manual switch if you wish and ground out the relays and turn the fans on earlier if you wish or have the ECM reprogrammed.

So, reprogram the ECM or live with it... :cry

OK, I'll live with it. It just seems like an unnecessary strain on all the systems. To put all the effort of dual fans and then not use them.

Thanks for the input though!!!

My thoughts EXACTLY. I'd really like to solve this problem, but it seems like you have to either replace the chip, buy a reprogrammer which costs a bazillion bucks (to just do this one thing), or hack in a manual switch. None of them sound like very good options to me. :(

I installed an adjustable thermostatic switch with remote bulb $19 and fan relay $12. i strapped the bulb to the upper radiator hose and mounted the switch to the wheel well. don't do it to a show car but it works and does not look bad.
