Nylon covered? What should it look like?
Mine were definitely original at 166k miles when
I pulled it out in favor of a cloyes true roller and
I saw no hint of any coating.
Hmm, was there any hint of chain slop?

Methinks you have horseshoes ...

Besides the vulnerability of the nylon teeth, is the issue of chain stretch.
Even with all metal sprockets, the chains stretch over time. Roller chains
seem to last longer than the Morse or HY-Vo type, but even they wear out. I
am running on borrowed time. The new long block is ready. All I need is an
injection system. Good luck, and...

Nope, but I am the 4th owner and the first to ever do anything more than wash wax and cruise.

How I wish you were right.

Here are pictures of the original ones I pulled out, both with GM stamps. Click to enlarge.

Well the heads are out and the project has taken a new direction. Now that ever thing else is out of the way pulling the block will be easy. I might as well get the rebuild out of the way.

Looking at crate engine prices I don't think I want to rework my old heads. Think I will go aluminum heads on a long block and a better cam.

I hate it when replacing a timing chain becomes replacing an engine.

Can you say ZZ383 really fast a bunch of times...

Performance crate engines: don't pay retail price, don't pay trade
price, don't settle until you find someone will to sell for cost, plus
a bit.

Well, that is not a nylon cam sprocket. Looks to be steel,
the other ones are a nylon/aluminum composite.

From your sig, your car is an '87. As I mentioned earlier
in the thread, I vaguely remember reading that there was a
change-up along the way. Apparently your engine was
built after the switch.

I haven't seen tartar like that on teeth since I bought
something from a street vendor overseas. What were
the rest of the innards like?

Aside from the buildup, the wear on the teeth doesn't
look too bad, actually. Not bad for 166k !

Like brand new. The lifter valley was clean as a whistle and the top sides of the heads were clean with a light gold oil tint color to them. There was very minimal carbon buildup on the pistons and combustion chambers of the heads.

Well, that's the way you like to find them. I wonder
why the cam gear looked like that... It has been a while
since I've been inside someone else's engine and I don't
remember coming across an instance like this - one part
with buildup and everything else sanitary.

FWIW, my NAPA replacement cam gear was very dark iron. So, the normal buildup of oil residue would easily make it look like Scorp's. So that picture is deceiving. I don't recall, but I think it might have from the same casting, and even had GM stamped on it.
