4.10s are what most people with 6speeds get.

I would be hessitant to say that a 4.09 gear is the best for all 6-speed LT1's. Depends on what you want. I personally really liked the 3.54 gears I used to run and I now run a 3.73 gear. If I were running 4.09 gears I would be shifting to 5th gear to get through the traps in the 1/4 mile. I also like to blast it sometimes on the highway and the car felt faster with 3.54 gears than with the 3.73 gears. I would personally hate running 4.09 gears on my setup.

My point, it depends on your setup. For a 6-speed heads and cam LT1, then you would probably enjoy the 4.09 gears. I do like cruising at 75-80 in 6th gear with the 3.73 much better than the stock 3.45 ratio.

Forgot to add: My 3.73 gears are Motive gears.

How ???? I am not real sharp but I run thru the traps just shifting into 4th and sometimes rolling thru in 3rd at 6500rpm with the stock 3.45 gear.....would the 4.10 take down a whole gear change???? what are you running??? i.e. engine set-up, trap spd, q mile time????

Running 4.10's, in 4th gear turning 6375 rpms, my car is running 114 mph.

This price seems really cheap for a Corvette gear set. I would make sure that these gears are for a Corvette D44, not just a regular D44.

130+ trap speed in the 1/4 on the squeeze shifting at 6k puts me in 5th gear on the big end.

I think I run through the traps at about 5,200-5,400 RPM in 4th NA with 119-120mph trap speeds.

With 3.54 gears, I was right in the midde of 4th gear going through the traps at 117.

Here is a video from inside the car when I was shifting at 6200-6300 NA. Shows you where I cross the traps and you can hear how much RPM the engine has when crossing.

I also am looking for these gears for my 96 LT4. Is there a site that I can order the gears from? Why in the corvette forum mall do I see A price of almost 2k to change out the rear. I am ready to buy today is someone who knows these answers could step in and educate me.

Thanks

What is the q time at 130mph??? and NA at 115 to 120??? Just figuring out where I am in the mix of q times....

I have been thinking I was going to put a 4.10 viper gear from DRM..until you posted any help would be great....

Vettthret

Where to buy a gear? Installed?

I would call DRM; after looking around these guys have a good price if you send it to them.......There is also a company in FL..that was in the Mag. "Corvette" advertising a $895 install if you sent them yours you would not have to pay core......The guys at Exotic Muscle (i.e. Trevor) are very good also..

Buellfreak,

Thanks for the Tip. DRM sells the 4.09 for $550. I'll go this route. Thanks again. :yesnod:

Ask Tim at DRM about the 4.10 viper gear.....it does not need upsized bushings to fit like the 4.09....According to my research it is stronger...Tim is the one who turned me on to this...

Hey,vette92,did you pick up some mph with your gears?I hardly get out of 3rd when I run,and my best mph is 114+ so far and I wandered if I would mph better since it would keep me more in my power band. After some experimentation,I found my motor likes to be shifted at 6400 for the best results. What are you shifting at?By the way,I liked the video :D

These gears required the dreaded welded pinion shim, it's prone to failure. Get the Viper gears from Dodge, they're 4.10 instead of 4.09.

edit: opps, sorry, you have an auto trans/Dana36, not sure about that gearset. BTW, 4.09 is pretty low for an auto, most folks run 3.54 or 3.73 gears with a 4 speed auto.

Eric

What is the q time at 130mph???
Funny you ask as the times are not any better than my NA times, but I have plenty of excuses to pass around. I blew my built motor back in the middle of '01 and have not shot that much at it since. Only one race day on a bad clutch (1/3 of the disk was bare) with the Nitrous since and only ran in the 11.6 range @ 128 with 1.9 60' times. I think that was with a 150 shot, but it may have been the 100. It had a severe shake in it at the big end from the clutch for 3 rounds but I got the big trophy for my class to take home so it was OK.

and NA at 115 to 120???
My NA times vary, as do everyones, depending on the time of year. Generally in the middle of summer it is around 116-118, and spring and fall it is in the 119-121 range. Best NA time was a couple months ago with an 11.54@119 and lifted because I was ahead of the guy in the other lane and did not want to break out (did anyway ). May have been a little more in there if I hadn't (maybe -.15 at best I figure). That was with a 1.73 60' on ET Streets and Skinnies babying it off the line.

I have been thinking I was going to put a 4.10 viper gear from DRM..until you posted any help would be great....
I did not mean to discourage anyone from getting higher gears, I just do not think there is a single ratio that someone can say that is best for all 6-speed Corvettes. Depending on your power level, 4.10 gears may be the thing to get. I simply wanted to show the flipside that it is also a personal preference as to gearing. I would simply not be able to hook up with 4.10 gears on the street.

Hey,vette92,did you pick up some mph with your gears?
I do not think I picked up anything from the gear IMO. I could not tell you for sure though as I have never done a back to back comparison. I have run a 11.78 @ 117 with a CC305 cammed 396 wth 3.54 gears though. I do run faster with my current setup but how much of it I can say is the gearing is debatable as I have more power now.

What are you shifting at? By the way,I liked the video
Thanks! In the video, I have the shift light set to 6200 or 6300 (I do not remember exactly which) but that was when I was running a 240/250 solid roller cam. With my current hydraulic roller cam, I am shfting at around 6000 and getting the same ET and MPH results. (The reason for that is the cam is better matched to my heads and the roller was maxed out because of head flow.)

I just updated my air intake (home made ram air) so I am expecting a good increase in times and MPH on the next good weather day I can get to the track.
