My 1988 has had a noise in the left rear for some time. Started off with a grinding sound when putting in drive or reverse. Noticed that the noise is now a clicking sound while driving from slow speed on acceloration. Also notice a grinding noise when turning left in the rear left. I jacked up the car and have a little movement from 12:00 to 6:00, but no movement from 9:00 and 3:00.
My question is does this movement in the wheel be the ujoint rather than the wheel bearing. Thanks for all replies
According to your signature, your Vette has 98K on it. If the hubs/wheel bearings and the u-joints are the originals, you're most likely due for all of the above. I had to replace the hubs/bearings at 87K, all half shaft u-joints at 104K.
Ouch. Good news is if you have moderate mechanical skills you can do these jobs yourself.
Thanks Oly, I just returned from looking a little closer, when I rock the car back and forth, I can certainly here the ujoints poping both at the rear end and also the hub on the left rear, I think I will start with the ujoints first and then wheel bearings. Thanks Oly. :D
U joints are made to flex. That's why they are named, "joints". Unless they are frozen up, the wouldn't inhibit movement, vertically or horizontally. The cause of the movement is elsewhere. The "clicking is likley, play in the splines between the outer yoke shaft (AKA as "spindles") and the wheel bearing hub. The "grinding" could be a sloppy wheel bearing allowing the rotor to contact, where it shouldn't. While none of your symptoms are those of worn U joints, that doen't mean that they're not. Good luck, and...
