The other timing chain thread got me all paranoid now. The '86 L98 has over 100k on the clock and I figure Im on borrowed time. Plus I've finished the nitrous install and Im itching to use it, but the last thing I want is for something like that to break.
So here's my questions.
1. Can I use a roller timing set with my '86 L98?
2. Should I get a 2 piece timing cover?
3. Any particular brank of timing set I should get?
4. About what am I looking to spend on the parts including timing cover, water pump, and oil pan gaskets?
5. Any REAL reason to get the gear drive timing sets? Are they made better?
Anyhow, please post your comments and any suggestions. TIA!
1. Yes.
2. Not necessary unless you plan on changing cam timing often.
3. Cloyes is a good one.
4. I honestly don't know.
5. They provide better timing, but are loud as hell and annoying. :)
All the parts will be under $100. but the polished t/cover is a waste of $ when the engine is back together you can't see it. If you get an after market t/cover you'll need a new timing pointer too.
I've seen some polished aluminum covers w/ hardware and gaskets for $30+shipping on eBay. Are those not very good or something? The regular ones arent all that much cheaper.
