I need educated a bit. I got a 383 shortblock in my deal when I bought my car. I'm debating it vs the stock 350 for now. It is my understanding that the 383 is a .030 over stroked 350. Where does the 396 come from? Just the crank, or more boring?
I vote 383 simply because if you use the correct FORGED PARTS that are cheaper and correctly matched to build the 383,match the dcr, cam timing, and both exhaust and intake tuning, the differance will be almost not measurable and if you think that that extra 13 inchs of displacement and slightly longer stroke are a big plus your kidding yourself, use the money saved on better cylinder heads, port work, and a better quality roller cam, youll never know the differance! why you see the better results with most 396 combos is because guys that go for the extra expence in the short block also tend to spend more on the other parts that really matter like machine work, cylinder head work and better matched cams. most guys building a 396 don,t just ask their buddy what cam worked in their engine, they tend to research the parts in the combo , and tend to have a good( SOMETIMES EXPENSIVE) shop do some or all the assembly work, while many guys building the more comon 383s tend to buy kits and just slap them together, with little understanding of how small changes in port work, cylinder head porting, compression and valve work can have a big effect on hp/tq
we have all seen guys put box stock heads on a 383, but most guys spending the money to build a 396 take the time to get port work, and professional advise durring the build!
Speed Demon motorsports sells either 383 or 396 both forged for the same price. It may only be 13CI, but for the same price would you want a Large or a Super Size coke? :D

haha.. that's the only place i've heard of them being the same ... definitely 396 if they are the same.. usually the 383 is cheaper though. I am yet to find a 396 crank that isn't forged though - unlike 383 ones.
The thing is that you can get something like a Scat 9000 cast crank good to 600HP for a 383 for a measly $275 or so, but there are NO 3.875" cranks I know of that are cast for a 396.
I’m getting an engine built now, all forged. The cost for doing an all forged 383 and 396 are the same.
I was hell bent on getting a 396, I love the sound of saying 396, 383 has no nostalgia (to chevy :) ).
I changed my mind and did a 383 when I started thinking about how much nitrous I’m gonna spray. It will have a direct port 200 shot (and hopefully not go any bigger). The geometry of the 383 is a little more forgiving than the 396 with nitrous.
If you’re talking about no nitrous or up to a 150 shot, 396 all the way.
How many people have BROKEN a cast crank? Is it worth it for forged? :blueangel:
scorp you are right on this one you get a cigar, the cast crank is fine the pistons and rods are your weak link get forged stuf there and you will be happy the 396 is going to have more down low and up high just because its the larger of the two i would say every thing being equal it should make more torque than a equivalent 406 but the 406 will out horse it because of the cubes
O.k. then I'll ask......which one if you have forced induction???? I want a 383 or 396 when I break something which I'm sure I will.....what are your opinions???
I'm thinking since I should go forged everything I should just go with the 396???
One more question...what makes the 406 different...price wise, etc...?
