OK, after reading all the posts on replacing the fuel pump I am going to tackle it this weekend. A few of the posts recommended replacing the gasket where the pump is bolted on the tank. I already spoke to the dealer about getting the pump and the sock(filter on the intake) but they say they can't get the gasket. Anyone know where I can get one of these? I am in Austin, TX and would like to get it local if possible. If not, I need to find it somewhere that can ship it fast.
BTW, Y'all have been the best. I have never seen a group of people so knowledgeable and passionate about one subject and be so willing to share that knowledge with others.
Thanks!!!!!!
I didn't even know we had a gasket on the pump-tank connection (if we're talking about the same thing).
My pump just sits on the metal 'sturrup' base on the bottom, and then attatches via a hose to the metal feed line out of the tank. as for holding the pump against the whole assembly to keep it from jiggling... just use a heavy-duty zip tie or hose clamp.
If you're talking about the fuel pump assembly (in entirety) and the gasket where it (the whole assembly) actually bolts onto the top of the tank itself... again no gasket there either. Maybe mine were removed long ago, but it still works fine with no leaks.
Well it may be there isn't. I don't see any mention of it in my shop or Haynes manual but I have seen it posted in this forum. I'll see if I can find the post again.
I have changed my fuel pump several times, don't ask. There IS a gasket between the fuel sending unit housing, and the tank. This gasket is very durable. I have never changed mine. Carefully pry the sending unit from the tank, and you'll be fine.
For the record, the part number for that gasket is, 14076169, for 1984-89. 1990 takes a 10140598. In 1989 the former listed for $1.20, the latter, for $1.10. Just for the record, the illustration shows the 10140598 for 1984-'87 and the 10140598 for 1988-'98. The text lists it as I first wrote. I tend to trust the text over the pictures. Even with inflation, how much could you be out, buying both. My money says you will need neither. Good luck, and...
RACE ON!!!
[EDIT] PS. It's called the "gasket, fuel tank filler neck".
