Default Questions on the Mez pump

Thunder Racing has the HD pump for $214.95 plus shipping and handling. Their writeup says it requires major mods in F-boby cars, any in ours (C-4s)? Is there a better price somewhere else? Jeg's has a standard for $199.99. Anybody ever use a CVR pump? It's $212.99 in Jeg's. The expected life is 2500 hours-guess that's okay.

Thanks guys

I have the heavy duty pump. The Vette doesn't require mods like the f-body (cutting the radiator shroud). To see a few pics of mine, follow this link

about my HOT Cam install and page down. Btw...I did place a rubber pad between the bottom of the MAF sensor electronics and the pump since the MAF sensor rests on top of it.

Thanks for the "Hot Cam tech tip" thread. If you have to replace the Mez pump, Can you just remove it from the pump housing or does the pump housing have to come off, too? I've also read about the choice of relays, which did you use? Was there anything that didn't come with the Mez pump kit that you needed?

You would need the relay. I used a Bosch 30amp. The pump comes with a 20amp inline fuse in a little plastic holder. I know of 2 people that melted it, so I cut it off and put in an automotive fuse back by the battery where I connected the power line. You'll need the various electrical connectors and some 12-14ga wire. Water pump gaskets, as well. Everything else comes with the pump.

You can remove just the pump, in fact the HD (those prices are about average) has to be installed after the pump housing is inplace. It clears the A/C accumulator by only about 3/8".

If the pump fails, you can unbolt it from the housing. It'll now take longer to drain the coolant than to actually change the waterpump!

I used a Barry Grant fuel pump relay (pic #66 in the HOT Cam write-up :D) It's rated at 30A. The Mez heavy duty pump pulls 9A, so there's plenty of margin.

Everything else came with the pump. However....

I did three other things...
- The in-line 20A fuse holder that comes with the MEZ is a cheap POS. Replace it with a quality 30A fuse holder, but be sure to install a 20A fuse. $5 is cheap insurance.
- There's a cheap interference style electrical connector between the pump wiring and the wire leads that run to ground and relay power. I cut that connector off and replaced it with a weather-resistant, positive locking weatherpack connector (see pic 75 in the HOT Cam write-up :D)
- I replaced the o-ring seal that goes between the pump and the housing. The directions say to re-use the old one, but for a $1 or so from Jeff Kopp, why not put a new one on?!

Other than the two things I changed...I've been very pleased with the pump. Last month I did some lapping sessions at Hallett Motor Racing Circuit. Coolant temps were not an issue (I also have a 160* t-stat and I've reprogrammed my fans using LT1 Edit to come on sooner). I did see my oil temp hit 304*...

I too am running the HD unit. Only mods I made to the wiring were to pour some JB weld into the backs of the cheap electrical quick disconnect by the pump to keep the wires from backing out when clipped together. I amusing an NOS brand 30 amp relay on mine. It is a little more tricky to get the pump in and out of the car, but I am getting better at it. The first time I tried installing it I thought it was impossible to get it in there and thought I should have gotten the standard duty pump (which is shorter). Either one will work fine though.

Thanks for the info. I'm running another post dealing with gathering all the tips from guys that have installed the Mez pump. My plan is to construct an article that covers it all. And the info is just pouring in. :grouphug:
