Looks like a DIS (Distributorless Ignition System) to me. If anything there "might" be a shaft where the old distributor was mearly to be used as a crank signal. Otherwise I wouldn't be surprised to see something like a magnetic crank trigger on the crankshaft pulley area somewhere.
 cool thanks guys. yeah i think he is a forum member. i found the link digging through the archives. the only reason i asked about the system was i was thinking of doing the LT1 intake mod but didn't want to drill the hole for the distributor. plus i thought it would look cool on one of the sides where the cover would go. just wanting to be diffrent
you can do it, if you use a dry sump syetem with external belt driven pump. Then you won't need the distributor at all, just a shaft in there so the oil channels are closed (otherwise you'd have a big leak where the distributor shaft would be)... still a lot of work, why not just get an LT-1 and be done with it.
I think if you look into the distributor problem all you have to do is find the shafts they put in the distributor hole when they crossed over to DIS and still ran the oil pump from a shaft.
Problem is you would have to drill a hole in the intake for the oil pump drive shaft so you might as well put in a distributor. Unless you just want to be diffrent.
do a search on the thirdgen boards (thirdgen.org) If I'm not completely hallucinating I remember seeing a modified LT-1 there, someone modded it to accept a distributor.
