car suddenly developed a starting problem. first crank, engine will not start. Key off , then second crank, engine will start. Checked fuel pressure. first crank, 40 PSI down to 36 then to 0. second crank 40 to 36 and car starts. ran berrymans thrugh 2 tanks of gas (400 mile road trip). no change. the car is an 86 with original pump, regulator and injectors. 150K+ miles. should I just go with new ford #24 injectors and a new regulator or try to troubleshoot further.
Re: leaking injector or bad regulator (fiddleplayer)
From the looks of it, it may not necessarily be fuel delivery related. When you say 40 to 36 to 0 after the first crank, are you saying tht it held 40 while the pump was running, 36 when the pump stops and then will slowly drop to 0, or is it immediately drops to 0. Big difference. If it immediately drops to 0 then it could be the pump or your regulator. If it slowly drops to 0 within 2-3 minutes, then it could be either of the above two or leaky injectors. If it takes a long time to drop to 0, then I would look elsewhere for the starting problem.
Re: leaking injector or bad regulator (fiddleplayer)
the pressure goes to zero almost immediately. When I turn the key on it goes to 40, start cranking down to 36 and then to zero almopst immediately. I checked the writeup in tech tips and will try that this weekend. thanks for the tips.
There is a series of tests you can do (all easy) that involve clamping off the fuel lines to determine which is bad. I just got to work so I don't have my manual handy to take a picture for you.
