94 Automatic that won't go into Park
A few days ago my 94's shifter went wonky. The car performs and shifts just fine, but the shifter seems to be out of sync. When I put it in Park the car is still in reverse, reverse is reverse but very close is neutral. Neutral is drive and drive is drive. If I pull it all the way down to 2 and then go to neutral the car will go into neutral but just that once......going back to just drive then neutral just keeps it in drive. If I put it in Park (the tranny is still in reverse) and turn it off the key comes out and the wheel is locked just fine. This is kind of dangerous as without the parking brake on the car will roll when turned off, and when starting it, it's already in reverse! Did I have a cable slip somewhere? Any ideas on if this might be underneath at the tranny end or (dread) inside the console? The GM manual is not real helpful.

I found a similar problem on my '90 this week, the outer casing for the cable had pulled out of the mounting at the shifter. PITA to get to & had to order a new cable, hope thats not your problem.

Hey, I lucked out! Got under the car and found one of the bolts holding the cable bracket was missing and the bracket was hanging by one bolt! A 59 cent repair!!!! Yahoo!! thanks for the feedback...some days you win one!!!!
