'94 vette security system won't allow to start
I have a '94 C4 vette that will not start at times. The security light is solid when I insert the key and attempt to start. If I wait approximately 5 minutes, it will usually start. I bought a new key and that did not help. I tried to purchase a by-pass for the security, but they do not make one for this year and model. Has anyone experienced similiar problems or have any suggestions on a solution?

I have heard of a trick, that I have not personally tried or had to try. Take a can of compressed air, and spray into the key slot itself. I think the reasoning is, if there is enough metal shavings even as fine as they may be from your old key, it somehow can I guess for lack of a better term, cloud the reading of your key when you insert it.
As I said, this is just something I heard, I don't know if any of it works or is true. It does make a little since though.

It's VATS that will not allow you to crank, not security. You may have worn contacts in the ignition switch that "make" with the pellet. When it won't crank, measure the resistance across the wires from the ign sw that go to the VATS module ( on my 87 they come out the bottom of the steering column, go under the carpet to a 2 pin connector). Disconnect the connector and measure the resistance across the wires from the column with the ignition key plugged in. It should be the same as the pellet. If not, or over 10k ohms, replace the ignition switch. If ok, then jump the clutch safety switch (gear selector switch if automatic) and try a crank. If VATS is working, you should be able to hear the start enable relay click behind the center of the dash when you attempt a crank.

Electric circuit-board cleaner sprayed sparingly into the ignition switch might help. This is usually a dirt or wear problem. The worst thing will be that you need a new key cylinder.
