Im eventually going to buy a chip for my stock 91 L98. Hypertech and Jet Performance are the two companies Ive heard publicized the most, any suggestions, reviews?
My suggestion is to use the stock chip until you have mods that require you to have a custom chip burned (heads, cam, etc.). I briefly used a Jet stage 2 chip until I did some testing at the track and realized that my car was about .15 faster in the 1/4 mile with the stock chip. :yesnod:
If you have a 6spd SLP.com has chips for 69.95 on clearance. Performance gain I would imagine would about be the same as anyone else's if you don't have many mods. But you will get the fans to come on sooner. 70 bucks ain't too bad.
ive heard people commenting on putting a 160 degree stat - which does what? kick the fans on sooner? with the ultimate goal of keeping the engine cooler? ive read taht the 160 just confuses the ecu, and that the 180 is more workable fora street car...
Stat only allows it to run a little cooler under normal fan settings. It doesnt affect the fan settings.
In conjunction with lower settings, the car will run substantially cooler. Mine runs between 180-205 oil and 170-185 coolant. With this low temp, i can bump up timing a few degrees for a couple extra HP.
It wont confuse the ECM, the ECM is waiting for it to enter closed loop, which will take longer with the 160 and affects mileage slightly, but it doesnt take very long to enter closed loop unless youre in winter.
Using an Ed Wright fastchip here with a 160 stat.... tried to have one burned for me by a Forum member but after he sent me two different chips burned for my engine (the second time I sent him my stock chip so he could extract the info from it exactly and still couldn't even get the engine to start) I gave up and went with the Ed Wright fastchip and worked perfect right out of the box and hasn't caused me a bit of a problem since... Engine runs great and temps are never higher then 182. Unfortunately I lost money on the first attempt but I figured live and learn... :_dupe:
I have an 86 with auto. Hypertech chip helped the shifting enough to make me happy. Shifting in town was real "luggy". Had to run in D and shift to OD after leaving town. Now can leave in OD all the time. :steering:
