In most cases, the water pump should start with a very slow weep that is detectable if one looks closesly under it on the crossmember and, possibly, tracking marks up under the clam shell where the belt slings the fluid. Just keep an eye on it at each oil level check and you should not have to worry about the Opti. This is really the only way to preclude an Opti problem.
Just saw your post about water pump leak protection. Here's what I did when I replaced my opti, I took some RTV and ran a bead around the cap to dist. base and around the four wire connector. True it may be harder to take the cap off later, but with the LT-1, you don't have to take it off very often. I also vented the opti like the 96s. One more thing I'm doing is replacing the OEM H20 pump with a Meziere electric pump for four resons: 1. to eliminate one possible source of oil leak, 2. better flow at idle (stop & go), 3. eliminate the water pump leak through the weep hole, possibly saving the opti from early destruction, 4. It just lasts longer than the OEM pump. Hope this helps out
