Horsepower step by step
Was glossing through a 5 year old Chevy High Performance and ran across the following article that I thought the LT-1 guys might find interesting.
Whats unique about this article is that they added each modification one at a time, then buttoned it up and dynoed, and then went to the next modification..... very time consuming but very enlightening information.
Here is the meat of the article:
(Note, you cannot add up the hp gained from each modification to create the peak, simply because the gains were not always at the Peak)
Baseline stock 93 LT-1 ----------------------244 rwhp---- 282 rwtq
Borla cat back exhaust system ----------- + 9 rwhp ---- + 20 rwtq
K&N air filter ------------------------------- +4 rwhp ----- n/a
Accell 300+ ignition system ---------------+ 4 rwhp ----- n/a
Lingenfelter cold air inlet w/ big K&N --- + 14 rwhp------n/a
Hypertech powerchip------------------------n/a------------+7-9 ftlbs midrange
Hypertech adjustable FP regulator---------+6 rwhp--------n/a
Hypertech Airfoil-----------------------------+1 rwhp-------n/a
Hypertech underdrive pulley---------------n/a------------+ 9 ftlbs
Total for bolt-on Stage 1------------------275 rwhp ------308 rwtq
Lingenfelter Superram cam -------------+ 13 rwhp------+ 30 ftlbs
(Note, I actually think this was the 74211 cam)
ASM headers and random cat-----------+ 26 rwhp-------+ 10 ftlbs
ASM 58 mmthrottle body----------------+ 7 rwhp--------+ 5 ftlbs
Ported LT-1 intake------------------------n/a--------------+ 7 ftlbs
Compection cams 1.6 roller rockers---- + 6 rwhp--------+ 13 ftlbs
Lingenfelter CNC ported heads----------+ 34 rwhp-------+ 10-30 ftlbs
Total Stage 2 modification--------346 rwhp @ 6100 rpm - 334 ftlbs @ 4200 rpm
Removed underdrive pullye, remove 300+ ignition and added a Vortech S-trim Supercharge kit @ 6 psi-------------+ 92 rwhp--------+ 79 ftlbs
Grand total--------------------------------438 rwhp ---------413 rwtq
I believe the test vehicle for this was a 93 Fbody, and I also think it was Chris Harrington out of Texas who I think was and/or still is a forum member. Also the article says shortly after the installation of the Vortech, the LT-1 Hypereutectic pistons didn't survive, thus this vehicle then had a 383 with forged pistons and more boost..... but the article did not provide any #'s on that build up.
Well, I thought this article was fairly interesting and thought I would share.... hope you enjoy.
Cheers,
Beach Bum

Re: Horsepower step by step (corvette0096)
Looks like a SC or headers are the only *real* worth while mods. Heads were decent, but at ~1500 bucks+labor 30 Hp is not a lot.
I know what mods I would be doing it I have one of these and wanted to gain the most for the buck.
Interesting article. Thanks

This is very good data for someone to put on their site or in C4 Tech Tips for the "new" LT1 guys or those who don't see this thread.
Though the results might differ somewhat for a Vette LT1 they should give some guidelines for Vette mods.

Or start a few. Like, "I just installed an air foil, and I can really feel the difference. It must be worth 25HP." Good luck, and...
