I posted this in the tech/performance section and only received one suggestion. Perhaps this is the more appropriate forum. I have a 1986 stock L98, have done several things to it that should have set codes, yet I have never seen the light come on, ever. The designer of the dash cluster was certainly a brilliant man! And at this point in his life is on a daily regimen of Thorazine and Valium, I'm sure. The cluster is completely apart, I have cleaned everything. Separated the two boards in about 30 seconds. However, the check engine light is not so easy. It appears to be soldered to the inner board. The dealer has no listing for a part number and the one I gave them from my board does not come up. So now what do I do? Hope someone out there has an idea - I'm ready to drive the car, but can't with the dash out.
Re: Service engine light not functioning (loflyin)
Dude,
Granted I'm not the brightest bulb on the tree, but it sounds to me like you're looking for the Service Engine Soon light in the cluster. On your '86 the SES light is in the DIC above the radio where all your other warning lights are. In order to help we first have to understand your problem. Sorry if I'm thick, but you've confused me!
Re: Service engine light not functioning (VetNutJim)
Thank you. I thought the same but was told by the service manager at a local Chevy dealership that it was in the cluster upper left and felt stupid because of my difficulty identifying it. He said to separate the cluster boards and it would right there. At this moment I really do lack that GM Goodwrench Feeling. Thanks again, I'll go out and clean up my mess now.
Re: Service engine light not functioning (loflyin)
Thank you for the quick responses. Problem solved and have code 54 which is supposed to be low voltage at the (new) fuel pump. Charging the battery overnight just in case. Will check fuel pump relay, pressure, and general wiring for shorts. FPR holds 28 lbs. as long as you want it to. No, I don't have the answer yet, but because of you guys, I'm on my way. Thanks again, and I'll pass on the knowledge to that service manager.
