Pulling my '88 engine - what to do with AC compressor, evaporator, etc.
Anyone who has pulled an engine from an L98, what did you do with the AC system. Did you discharge it or just try to move it out of the way?

If it's functioning properly, just try to pull it back out of the way. That's what I did with mine on my '88. It's kind of a pain, but it can be done.
With the inner fender panels out of the way, I let the compressor rest on the area where the upper control arm bolts to the crossmember. I put a wire through one of the bolt holes and tied it down to the shock or something, to hold it back out of the way.

I agree. If you can save the refrigerant charge, do so. R-12 is currently $30 per lb. If your car has R-134a, it's still expensive to evacuuate the system and recharge. Plus, you need specialized tools like gauge manifold set ,vacuum pump and about 4 lbs of refrigerant. I know, I know, the system only holds 2.5 lbs, or so, but how about leak testing and accidental partial discharge when re-installing.
(I've been doing this for 35 yrs, actually did it right a few times - don't ask about the others, pls.)
