Default Replacing the ABS pump and brain...

can it be done at home or would it be better to get it done by a mechanic???

What work is involved?? Are any special tools needed??

Thanks in advance

You can probably do it at home, but you would have no way to test it properly unless you have access to a TECH II.

What you mean by testing it??? Can't I just try to lock up the brakes to see if the ABS works??

That seems a bit risky to me, what if it doesn't work? If it does seem to work, how would you know you locked up all four wheels.

Also, the ABS is an integral component of the ASR package.

The CCM will force the ABS to do a basic test as soon as you get above 3MPH. What is your plan when it sets a code? (It probably will.)

Well - I get a code right now.. That's why I'm replacing the unit...
Does anyone have instructions on what work and tools are involved in the swap???

I think the tools may be pretty straighforward. Line wrenches of the proper size for the brake lines and whatever it may take on the attaching brackets and the electical connectors just pop off. You will have to have a Tech 1 or 2 with the brake module to energize the new ABS unit to properly bleed the system. I don't think you can get fluid into it and (the air out)by just bleeding the brakes at the calipers.

I don't have the analyzer.. but my mechanic said that the code indicates that the pump is bad...The light only comes one when you start driving.. When turning on the car - the ABS/ASR light doesn't come on until I start driving..

Well I guess you made a liar out of me LOL! I have one wheel locking up and pretty sure it's the ABS pump. Have an appointment next week and will post the results.

Hey, let's resurrect this thing one more time! LOL! My mechanic told me I needed a new ABS pump for my 1986 Corvette, but he's not sure where to get one or even a refurbished one ( he said definitely don't get a used one because apparently this was a common problem with the C4). What did you find out in 2021? It's my driver side front locking up.

bumping this thread AGAIN! My mechanic has just informed me that the rear brakes on my car are locking up and I need a new ABS pump. I am debating if I should just bypass the system altogether and be done with this issue once and for all. Can it be done, and where can I find the ABS pump? I haven't been able to locate one.

I had two mechanics strongly recommend that I do not bypass the system! I found my ABS pump on eBay, and so far, all is well! Good luck!
