I did a search and found no help on this topic... I have an '87. I noticed something the other night while working on the car. It has the same rotor, distributer cap, wires, and plugs that came with the car I think (I bought it used). I looked at the plugs and they're a nice tan/brown color, so they're burning clean and the car idles and runs smoothly...
My question: Is it worth it to buy a "Davis Hi-Voltage" coil, cap, and rotor ($100), a set of high quality wires ($70), a set of platinum plugs ($30), and DynaMod high performance ignition module ($80) from Ecklers (or whoever)?
It seems to burn clean and idles smooth. I see no need to replace what's there unless people on the forum agree that it's a worth while upgrade. Thanks for all your help guys (and gals)!
I don't think you will need it unless you modify the engine..
It might give you a better combustion if you switch to a better ignition system, mayeb slightly better fuel economy, but more power? I don't think so unless you are already having problems..
The stock HEI ignition is one of the things GM did right with the L98. There is really no need to modify it unless you modify the engine, but I would get good plug wires anyway. Coil/Cap/rotor stock stuff is fine.
Unless you run a highly modified car with nitrous or boost or some type of big cam that generates really high cylinder pressures you have no need to go with a whole lot of aftermarket stuff. I'd upgradw wires and thats about it. The GM stuff is pretty darn good till you get exstensive mods.
