hey guys. I was coming home from work and my 89 started sputtering. After a couple of miles, I started to put the window up and it was slow so I fliped the gauge to volts and it was down around 12. It kept getting lower until the car died. I got my brother to hook cables to his jeep and we let it charge for a while. I started it about 5 min. later and drove off. For about 15 second it was up around 14 volts, as if it was charging. Then it started dropping again and died. I had the battery checked at Advance auto parts and it is fine. Is there anything else I should try rather than just going to buy a new alternator? I'm thinking it might be a bad connection since it seemed to be charging for a few seconds. Thanks

Re: Troubles with my charging system (WardVette)
My $$ say alternater
Get a good one, rebuilts come in two grades, best means they replaced all the parts, not just the ones they thought were bad...costs about $20.00 more.
IMHO, I would not get one from Advanced...I have seen two many people at the counter returning alternators, starters, etc, that weren't right.
If the battery is fine, have the alternator checked. NAPA usually has good prices on these units. I would start by checking the and cleaning the battery and alternator connections. :)
Your alternator clearly is not charging the battery. You should have noticed the red battery symbol on the dash being lit which tells you that the alternator is not charging the battery. Get a new alternator and recharge your battery with a battery charger before you install the new alternator.
ive been thought it all,try ur fusible link wire behind ur battery. on my 87' it was a factory color red wire that could have possibly burntout for some reason and cause u too also NOT have a battery light on in the cars control panel.i'd say spend some time and take out ur battery if u can and look for that fusible link..give her a shot. cheap fix and easy to do.
