I'm hoping someone can help me with a very annoying dash squeak that just developed on my '90. It seems like it's coming from almost right in front of me by my left hand either behind the guages or under the dash above my knees (if that makes any sense). Remember that '90 is the first year for the new dash.
I did a search and got a lot of results but unfortunately none of them were for a squeak in this area of the car. I can put up with some noises (I've had a plastic on plastic rubbing sound from near the center vents for the longest time), but squeaks are so annoying to me
:mad
Only way to fix these persistent squeaks is to take the whole thing apart and figure out whats making the noise, and then add padding/styrofoam or replace the part or tighten some bolts.
Maybe a long shot, but I had the same problem. Mine was a light tapping/sqeaky noise, sounded to come from maybe under the hood in the battery area, maybe in the dash somewhere, maybe inside the door at the front. I taped down a lot of stuff in the engine bay, no luck, dash partially out moved stuff about - no luck. I was ready to strip the door down , when I leaned forward to try to hear it better and *?%$@!! - it was the roof. the front drivers side torX bolt was loose.
It seems the sound is reflected down off the windshield, and sounds to be coming from the dash.
Heres another long shot but something else to check. I had what I thought was a bad dash squeak but it turned out to be the posts on my hood rubbing on the hood release mechanism. Put a little grease on them and the squeak disappeared.
I have a similar problem on the passenger side. It is also making me crazy. It only squeaks when the car has been driven for a while. I removed the lower dash enclosure and all I found was a wiring harness. I'm going back in this weekend and I'll let you know if I find any thing which may be similar on the driver's side.
Chased a similar squeak for weeks , found my hood stops were just a tad loose. extended them to tighten up the hood closing and that was the end of my squeak, whew!!
I just cured a squeak I had for years (5). Used to drive me crazy. Woudn't start until the car warmed up & then...squeak..squeak....Got ticked off one day & took off the upper trim pad. There was nothing under there that could possibly be squeaking, or so I thought. I used a liberal amount of foam tape on everything I could find. I swore if that didn't cure it I was gonna sell the damned thing. We'll no more squeak & I am now a happy camper. Hope you have the same results. :steering: :steering: :steering:

Re: Persistent Dash Squeak (4EVRVET)
I got pretty good at tracking down and fixing squeaks on my 1996 coupe and my 1994 Thunderbird Super Coupe. The T-Bird in particular was full of rattles and squeaks. I tracked them all down and it was wonderfully silent. Same with the Corvette.
First, it is very difficult to pin point the location of a noise while driving, so you need to develop a technique to recreate the squeak while the car is parked in the garage. Use my palm or fist, I smacked various locations with various force to get the squeak to happen. You then have to carefully listen to pin point the location. It takes some time and practice to "tune" your ear and your hand so don't give up.
On my 1996, found the sill covers, inside door panels, and instrument cluster were major sources. I removed many of the interior components and looked closely at the seams or mounting points. If you see a fine plastic or paint dust where two hard parts met, this is a likely source of a squeak. When two parts rub, they produce a fine powder residue. Be a crime scene investigator!
I used a variety of material to stop the squeaks and rattles. Remember, parts need to move around and while tightening screws will help, it will not fix all the squeaks. You need to allow parts to move but not make noise. For the sills, I covered them with Dynomat. For various dash, door panels, instrument cluster seams, or hard plastic trim I used a lot of the self-stick soft nylon loop Velcro tape between two parts. Velcro tape is nylon loop and will stand up to wear. Black foam tape works to fill large gaps or on the back of hard plastic where they are screwed into the body.
Occasionally, you will fine a rubber against hard plastic or painted surface. Use silicone grease to lubricate the rubber. Don't use regular grease or Vaseline as they may attack the rubber.
I had to remove both inside door panels and stick Velcro around almost the entire perimeter where the panel meets the door.
Thanks to everyone for the advice. In my post search I saw the posts about the hood squeaking but figured it wasn't that. From what I'm reading now I will check it. I'm going to do the easier stuff first: hood, roof panel, then onto the dash and interior trim.
I have tried reproducing the squeak while the car is not moving to no success. :(
That's the top of the dash board. It was really pretty easy, but I would recommend it as a last resort. In retrospect, I think that one of the spring clips that hook to the front of the windshield frame was the culprit. When it started to squeak I would push very hard0in the dash pad over the speedo & it would stop. I even went as far as driving around with a stethescope & still coudn't tell where it was coming from. Sorry to ramble on, but after 5 years of cursing & screaming
I need to vent..........Yes, happy days are here again. Not one squeak or rattle in the old girl.....

Re: Persistent Dash Squeak (4EVRVET)
I have the same squeak I think. I thought maybe.. battery, hood latch, but never considered the roof.
Funny thing is, it only squeaks after the cars' heated up. And it does it with the slightest little tiny movement of the car. At least that means it's not something vital.
i have a squeak that comes from the dash pad just above the gauges about 3 in. behind the windshield. if i press on the dash there, it goes away. i was thinking about some foam?
Maybe you can remove the defroster grille in the center if the dash next to the windshield. The solar sensor is located there so take care. The grille is removed by prying up from the rear. You might be able to stuff some foam in there?
I have the same.........let me know if you find out what it is..............after a few beers, I gave up. Figured I'd tear up more than I'd fix.
